Through Thinning Landscapes

Through Thinning Landscapes by BothAnd Group

Installation at ‘the walks’ Loughrea, Co. Galway.

Come to 'The Walks' on Sunday October 4th at 2pm to hear from BothAnd Group about the process behind making this installation.

Through Thinning Landscapes

The installation, 'Through Thinning Landscapes', aims to draw attention to the loss of the richness of life in the Irish landscape, and to inspire people to take action to resolve the urgent biodiversity crisis.
In his book, ‘Whittled Away’, Pádraic Fogarty describes Irish wildlife as having ‘been squeezed into . . . thin ribbons of treelines and hedgerows’. Grass monocultures dominate the Irish landscape, and in this installation, they loom over a narrow corridor through which there is just enough space to move. The individual moves through these thinning corridors for Irish wildlife, confronted by their loss. At the far end of the installation is a mirror, positioning the individual as a responsible agent within the complex systems of an environmental crisis.

BothAnd Group is a research and spatial design collective that aims to broaden the scope of architectural practice in an age of ecological awareness. The primary motivation of their work is in understanding the behaviour of living systems, and in the design of environments that accommodate a more equal status between all forms of life.

BothAnd Group was formed in 2019 by four architecture graduates to critique contemporary methods of architectural production in an age of ecological awareness: to develop a framework for future critical practice. They aim to re-conceptualise spatial design practice beyond the narrow interests of the built object, and to embed the logic of biospherical systems into their work.
