Architecture at the Edge Festival
01-09.10.2022
Galway and West of Ireland
For its 6th edition, Architecture at the Edge invites architects, artists, academics, activists and others to submit projects, practices and perspectives to contribute to the Festival aim: to showcase architectural projects that are conceived through ‘acts of repair’.
What are the practical, architectural, and social features of our communities in need of repair? How can we remake the built environment to become more diverse and socially and environmentally sustainable?
In everyday usage the term ‘repair’ can mean to ‘fix’, ‘mend’, ‘renovate’ and ‘restore’. Additionally, it can mean to ‘have recourse to’, or ‘to return’, as in the phrase ‘repairing to’. Stretching across this web of synonyms lies a multitude of differences, but fundamental for architecture today is the actual need to rethink the construction and production of how we build.
Repair aims to expand the point of view from the object of architecture, to the way it operates in its context, advocating a role for architecture that catalyses or actively engages with the environmental, social and cultural repair of the places it is a part of.
