The House of Memory

Architecture at the Edge present

The House of Memory by David Kelly (TO BE CONFIRMED)

Installation of architecture /art object at Grattan Beach, Galway City.

Unfortunately this event has had to be postponed due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Rescheduled dates for the event will be announced as soon as possible.

With the current restrictions as a result of Covid 19, all of our lives have changed in ways we could have not foreseen, creating a new normal. One aspect of life which has been affected as a result of restrictions placed around gatherings are funerals, making increasingly difficult to mourn in the way that we normally would.

In terms of function, this installation looks to the boundaries between life and death, creating a vessel for memories of those affected by the pandemic, to be celebrated by those …

Visitors are invited to bring a small token to be left as a memory of those that have been affected, whether this is a simple photograph, a letter to them, or an object or token to represent them and leave them in the structure. Visitors are then invited to revisit the structure upon the easing of restrictions, when the structure will be disassembled and set alight, along with the tokens left behind a pyre of celebration and memory, and a beacon of hope for the future.

The form takes inspiration from two man-made features dotted throughout the west of Ireland; The Reek of Turf & Dry Stone Walls. Both represent an refined, yet almost primitive form of architecture, stacking and spanning of singular constructions elements.

At a large scale, Dry Stone walling forms boundaries throughout the West of Ireland, while at the same time, on closer inspection gaps begin to appear. Similarly, with reeked or footed turf, it is stacked in such a way as to allow air to move through the ‘structure’ to dry the turf.

The proposed structure mimics this simple stacking of constructional elements, exaggerating gaps in the structure, creating ‘shelves’ to house tokens left by visitors, and also allowing views through the structure, intended to represent the breaking down of traditional boundaries.

David Kelly Bio;

David Kelly is an Architectural Graduate from the West of Ireland, currently based in Dublin. His installation works draw largely from his experience in carpentry, blurring the traditional lines between 'designer' & 'builder' in Architecture. Believing that the act of design and construction is primarily a social one, the work always strives to create interventions which encourage connection, reflection, engagement in the conversation around the built environment, and it's responsibilities to the natural environment.
